Finding the Healthy at the Vending Machine

Let’s face it…when it comes to grabbing a snack from the vending machine, those unhealthy choices of candy bars and potato chips are far more tempting than the couple “healthy” choices of trail mix, crackers or low fat cookie items. The temptation becomes even stronger when we’re visiting the vending machine for a quick energy pick-me-up snack in the middle of the afternoon. The same goes for the pop machine: who’s going to purchase a healthy serving of milk or flavored water, when that caffeine loaded soda is promising that extra zing of energy that you need to make it to the end of the work day? So, how can we resist the temptation to indulge which, though it promises immediate energy, often leaves us more tired than before?

Bring Your Own Snacks

Okay, you can shop for you healthy option – preferably in single serving form, since you’ll be tempted to overeat if you simply open a box or bag. But, at your desk these healthy snacks are far too obtainable. You don’t have to decide to get up and walk to the vending machine when the munchies attack!

Ask For Healthy Options

Vending machine companies will supply healthy options if a special request is made. However, if you ask for it, you’d better be prepared to eat it, since they’ll take the healthy stuff out if it’s not disappearing.

Make Your Decision before You’re Standing at the Machine

Are you craving salty or sweet? If it’s sweet, you know you’ll choose either a pack of low fat cookies or perhaps a plain chocolate bar that’s not packed with calorie-loaded extras. If you’re craving a salty snack, choose some nuts or perhaps baked chips (if you absolutely must have chips!). Make this decision before you get up to walk to the machine, and then when you get there, you block out all the other options and quickly punch the number for the healthier version of salty or sweet!

The same holds true for the pop machine. You know what’s in there! Choose to buy a healthy drink like flavored water or a serving of milk (you can even choose chocolate milk – it’s healthier than soda!), or some fruit juice.

Be Prepared for Mistakes

If we are totally honest with ourselves, we know there will be days when we fail to choose the healthy options. But when you purchase that occasional soda from the pop machine, don’t let your one bad decision ruin the rest of your day!
